Comoros President Azali Assoumani was slightly injured in a knife attack on Friday, according to a government spokesperson. The attacker has been taken into custody.

Reports, have it that the attack took place at around 2 p.m. (1100 GMT) in Salimani Itsandra, a town just north of Moroni, the capital of Comoros.

President Assoumani sustained minor injuries during the funeral of a prominent sheikh in the country. Government spokesperson Fatima Ahamada assured that his injuries are not serious, and he has since returned home.

According to a local source, the attacker is a former policeman in his 20s.

In May, President Assoumani began his fourth term after a contested January election, which his opponents claim was marred by voter fraud.

This incident underscores the ongoing political tensions in Comoros following a contested election earlier this year. While President Assoumani’s injuries are minor, the attack raises concerns about security and stability in the nation.

The motives behind the attack remain unclear, leaving many questions about potential underlying issues that may need to be addressed for long-term peace and order.
