Four family members of Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), have returned to Uganda. This marks an important development in the complex story of the LRA, a group known for its violent actions and widespread suffering in central and eastern Africa.
The returnees, who arrived at Entebbe International Airport, include Kony’s stepmother, a blood sister, a stepsister, and a man who was taken in by Kony after losing his parents in 2005.
Ali Kony, Joseph Kony’s eldest son, was informed about their return but could not travel due to health reasons. Ali expressed his happiness at their return, noting that life in captivity is far from normal, comparing it to being freed from prison.
The return of these family members was made possible through efforts aimed at ending the conflict. Organisations such as PAX and APRU have played a key role in negotiating the return of former LRA fighters.
This process involves careful discussions with both the fighters and the governments involved. In previous years, many former LRA members have returned to Uganda, indicating a shift towards peace.
Joseph Kony remains at large, with an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity. His family’s return points out the challenges of reintegrating those who were involved with the LRA.
Many fighters hold a dual status as both victims and perpetrators, which complicates their reintegration into society. Women and children, who were often abducted and forced into relationships, face particularly difficult situations.
As Uganda continues to support the return of LRA fighters, it signals a move towards healing and reconciliation. However, the way forward is challenging.
