Passengers on buses in southwestern Uganda are very concerned about possible poisoning incidents, with Gateway Bus Services being pointed out as a key player in the issue.
To address these serious claims, the Kigezi Regional Police have called an urgent meeting for January 24, 2025, to talk about the situation and find ways to improve passenger safety.
This meeting follows many complaints from travellers who feel unsafe while using these bus services. Elly Maate, the spokesperson for the Kigezi Regional Police, mentioned in a letter that there has been a lot of public concern about these incidents.
He stressed that it is important to deal with these problems to make transport services better and ensure the safety of all passengers.
One particularly worrying case happened on January 15, 2025. Dr. Ronald Arineitwe Kibonire and a friend reportedly passed out while on a Gateway bus travelling from Kampala to Kabale. Arineitwe said that when the bus staff saw they were unwell, they did not help or call for help.
Instead, they left the two men outside the bus for hours, and they were later found without their belongings. This incident is part of a troubling pattern; police in Kabale confirmed that this was the ninth similar case reported in just two weeks.
Maate has urged all bus station managers to attend and take part in discussions aimed at holding bus operators responsible for safety issues. The aim is to rebuild public trust in Uganda’s transport system and ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
