Fuso Truck Crashes into Hardware Store, Killing One, Injuring Two

Police in Hoima have launched investigations into a tragic accident where a Fuso truck, registration number UBQ 836X, rammed into a hardware store at Kakoora Habitat Cell along the Hoima-Kampala highway. The accident, which occurred on Saturday, left one person dead and two others injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck had arrived to load cement when the driver lost control while reversing. The vehicle’s guardrail struck a pillar, causing the entire veranda shade to collapse. Moses Kyaligonza, a sales agent seated outside the shop, was crushed and died instantly. Two others, Eunice Serumaga and Mugabe, sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Solomon Binkamanyire, the owner of the building, stated that Kyaligonza was temporarily managing the shop on behalf of Wilbert Tumuhaise, whose wife was on maternity leave. “The driver failed to brake while reversing and damaged the entire shade where Kyaligonza was sitting,” Binkamanyire said.

Albertine Region Police spokesperson Julius Hakiza confirmed that officers from the Hoima East fire brigade responded to the scene. The truck was later towed to Hoima Police Station for inspection as part of the ongoing investigation. “We have arrested the driver to assist in inquiries and establish whether the accident was due to mechanical failure or human error,” Hakiza noted.

The tragic incident has raised concerns about road safety and the responsibility of drivers operating heavy vehicles in busy commercial areas. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially when reversing in congested locations, to avoid similar accidents.
