Mbale, (UG):- Transport and normal business operations were this week left paralysed in Mbale as floods cut off Mbale – Tororo Road in Nashikhaso Village, Bungokho Subcounty just five miles from Mbale Town in Mbale City.
The floods, a result of heavy rains that occurred on Tuesday, May 21, caused the busting of RIver Nambale cut out Munkaga at Gaz Petrol Station and Fahaab Petrol Station, as well as Bugema Ginnery and Mile 4.
The flash floods which happened just days after one kid drowned in the river on Friday 17th May 2024 left one child drowned, as narrated by Bulafu Ibraheem, one of the residents along the busy highway.
“It’s said that as the kids were jumping into the water to swim because they were three, one of them drowned and failed to swim and his remaining two friends tried to save him but they also failed and shouted that our friend was dying, but by the time people came in to rescue but unfortunately they found him dead,” he said via his Social Media page (FaceBook), adding that the incident occurred at the very bridge “we used to swim in when we were young but it was God’s will.”
He added, “I will first thank the people who tried to rescue him, may the almighty God reward you abundantly for your generosity. Secondly me as a teacher and humanitarian, I would like to urge parents kindly to be Vigilant of the whereabouts of their children in this short holiday. May the young soul of the boy rest in eternal peace. Bulafu Ibraheem Fdn we send our sincere condolences to family of the deceased that may the almighty God strengthen you in this hard situation”.
On 17th May 2024, DailyExpress reported how the community in Bunanimi Village, Bungokho Sub-county, Mbale District cried out for support to help rebuild two classroom blocks at Bunanimi Primary Schoo recently destroyed by heavy rains.
The damage according to the report left the “pupils and teachers stranded and at the mercy of nature, as classes are conducted from outside, provided sunshine and rain do not cause any disruptions”.
In another incident on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, “Stormy rains did not spare Nkoma Senior Secondary, Mbale High School, Mbale School of Nursing and Goodcare Nursery and Primary School all located in Sebei Cell, Nabuyonga Ward, Mbale Northern City Division, after damaging different structures within their Campuses”.
