The recent appointment of renowned musician Eddy Kenzo as a presidential advisor has sparked a flurry of reactions, with many weighing in on the unexpected move.
Kenzo, whose real name is Edirisa Musuuza, joined the extensive list of President Yoweri Museveni’s advisors this week, leaving many to ponder the implications of this decision.
While some, including his partner and Minerals Junior Minister Phiona Nyamutoro, were quick to offer congratulations, others expressed skepticism.
Kira Municipality MP Ssemujju Nganda was among those who voiced disapproval, accusing President Museveni of diluting the prestige of the presidential advisory role with appointments like Kenzo’s. Nganda drew a stark contrast between the initial advisors appointed by Museveni decades ago and the current crop, questioning Kenzo’s qualifications and expertise.
“The first presidential advisors, such as Prof George Kanyeihamba, Gen David Sejusa, and Ephraim Kamuntu, were individuals of unparalleled stature and experience,” Nganda noted.
“In comparison, appointing individuals with limited knowledge and experience, like Kenzo, diminishes the office of the presidential advisor.”
Nganda clarified that his criticism was not a personal attack on Kenzo, whom he admires as a singer, but rather a commentary on the suitability of his appointment.
“Kenzo has immense value as an artist, but I fail to see how that translates to advising the president,” he added.
With over 150 advisors, President Museveni’s team is already sprawling. In recent years, he has strategically tapped into the arts industry to court the younger voting demographic, appointing figures like Catherine Kusasira, Mark Bugembe (aka Buchaman), and Jennifer Nakanguubi (aka Full Figure) as advisors.
As the debate surrounding Kenzo’s appointment continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how his role will shape the presidential advisory landscape and whether his unique perspective will bring value to the table.
