DRC’s Special Unit Interrogates American Coup Plotters.

In a significant development, an attempted coup in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was successfully thwarted by the nation’s armed forces. The coup, which aimed to overthrow the DRC’s administration, was led by a group of individuals including three American citizens.

The Coup Attempt and Its Aftermath
The leader of the coup plot, along with approximately 50 individuals, were gunned down on Sunday, according to Sylvain Ekenge, a spokesperson for the DRC. Ekenge also confirmed that three American citizens, seemingly involved in the coup, were arrested and are currently undergoing interrogation.

Christian Malanga, a U.S.-based Congolese politician, was named by Ekenge as the leader of the coup. A significant portion of the coup plotters were reportedly executed by the armed forces, marking a swift and decisive response to the attempted overthrow.

Additional Incidents and Reactions
In addition to the main coup attempt, another incident occurred near the residence of Vital Kamerhe, a member of parliament who is expected to become speaker. This was reported by both Kamerhe’s spokesperson, Michel Moto Muhima, and the Japanese embassy. During this event, two guards and an assailant were killed. Ekenge also confirmed that one attacker was slain there.

In response to these events, the US embassy issued a security notice on Sunday, warning of “ongoing activity by DRC security elements” and reports of shooting in the neighborhood.

The Role of Social Media
A Facebook profile, purporting to belong to Christian Malanga, posted a live-streamed video in which he seemed to lead the attack. In the video, which has not been independently verified by Reuters, he expressed his frustration with the current administration, stating in Lingala, “We, the militants, are tired. We cannot drag on with Tshisekedi and Kamerhe, they have done too many stupid things in this country.”
