On February 24, 2025, a tragic accident occurred at a railway crossing in Malaba, located on the Uganda-Kenya border. The incident involved a motorcycle colliding with a train, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.
The victims were Francis Edaat, 25, the motorcyclist, and his passenger, 24-year-old Fatuma Emuron. A third passenger, an unidentified woman, sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses reported that the motorcyclist was speeding and ignored warnings from other drivers about the approaching train. Despite attempts by a cargo truck driver to alert him using flashing lights and honking, the rider failed to stop.
Joseph Mwabaze, the traffic police chief in Malaba, has launched an investigation into the accident. He stressed the importance of obeying road signs to prevent similar tragedies.
