CRISIS! Luzira Prisons Go Two Weeks without Water over Shs18Bn Bills

Luzira prisons Complex comprising of Kampala Remand, Upper Prison Maximum Security, Murchison Bay and Women’s Prison has gone for two full weeks without tap water.

 

This has been confirmed by the Prison Service Spokesperson, Senior Commissioner of Prisons, Frank Baine in a statement issued today, 26th August, 2024.

 

Baine puts blame to National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) that he accuses of disconnecting the Prisons even after receiving part payment of what it demands the Service.

 

Baine confirms that NWSC disconnected the water service to Luzira Prisons Complex on 13th August 2024 due to the water outstanding bills of Shs18,272,450,274.

 

“This disconnection occurred despite Ministry of Finance releasing Shs2,355,351,000 in the First Quarter of the FY2024/25,” says Baine.

 

He however, allayed fears of a catastrophe saying the Prisons Service is currently using Water Bowsers to mitigate the water crisis as negotiations continue between the Ministries of Finance, Internal Affairs, Uganda Prisons Service and NWSC.
