The Bugisu Cooperative Union (BCU) has initiated plans to register its member coffee farmers in an effort to meet international demand for Arabica coffee and comply with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
BCU General Manager, Barbra Wasagali, announced this on Monday morning, 28th October, 2024 as she introduced a team of 20 individuals trained by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) to conduct the registration over a 20-day period across selected primary societies.
According to Wasagali, the team underwent a week-long training and is fully equipped with the necessary resources to collect accurate data from farmers.
Matia Mugerwa, an extension officer at UCDA, explained that the registration aims to create a comprehensive database and traceability system for farmers, enhancing coffee quality by assigning farmers specific geo-locations. He added that this effort aligns with global standards under the EUDR, which seeks to establish a deforestation-free supply chain for products like coffee, cocoa, and palm oil.
He warned that failure to comply could negatively impact Uganda’s coffee sector, as the European Union is a major export market.
