A notorious gun wielding robber who had been a menace to traders plying their business at Buteza market located at Sironko district every Monday.

The proverbial 40 days for Wycliffe Wanabuma, 28 year old   resident of Nalusufu village, Namatyari parish, Bunabutiti Sub County in Bududa district expired on Monday, 19th August, 2024 in the early morning.

According to traders, Wanabuma had made it a habit to stage illegal roadblocks at Mount Elgon National Park alongside the path which connects Bunabutiti Sub County in Bududa district to Buteza town council located at Sironko district where he would rob them at gun point.

According to Sulai Majeme, a resident of Buteza Sub County, Wanabuma has been staging illegal road blocks at Mount Elgon national park along that very path targeting business people who cross to Buteza market located at Sironko district every Monday.

Majeme adds that Wanabuma has been threatening traders with a gun before taking away all their money.

Paulo Bukoma, one of the traders narrated to this reporter on Monday that Wanabuma carried on his usual routine yesterday, Monday and staged the road block at the same spot.

He says that he stopped a section of traders from Bunabutiti who were going to conduct business at Buteza market with the aim of robbing them of all their money after threatening to shoot them dead if they resisted.

Bukoma says that the intercepted traders made an alarm which attracted people from both sides of Bududa and Sironko who responded armed with pangas, stones, sticks and bricks.

Frank Muzoora, the Sironko District Police Commander says that the locals chased Wanabuma who then started shooting in the air to disperse the crowd, but the locals persisted until they got him when his bullets had gotten finished.

He says the locals beat him until he died on spot from the national park adding that the AK47 gun has been recovered and is currently at Buteza police post as investigations continue.

Aharikundira Africano, the outgoing Resident District Commissioner of Bududa district has confirmed the incident saying the body has been taken to Mbale city mortuary for postmortem.
