A tragic road accident along Juba Road on Tuesday morning claimed the life of a female cyclist after she was hit by a speeding fuel tanker, with police citing reckless driving as the primary cause.
According to North Kyoga Police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema, the crash happened around 7:30 a.m. near Good Lord Hardware as both the tanker and the cyclist traveled from Kamdini towards Lira City.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the white Mercedes Benz fuel tanker, registration number KBS 761N/ZD 8362, attempted to overtake the cyclist but misjudged the maneuver, fatally crushing the woman’s head.
Police confirmed that the driver, whose name has not yet been released, later surrendered himself and the truck at Lira Central Division Police Station. Traffic officers from Lira City West Division visited the accident site to conduct inquiries and collect evidence.
The victim’s body was transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination, while the fuel tanker was impounded for further mechanical inspection.
Okema emphasized that early findings clearly point to reckless driving as the root cause of the tragedy and assured the public that investigations are ongoing.
