His Excellency the President of Uganda has appointed Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as the new Chancellor of Makerere University.
This was confirmed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe on his Twitter handle on the evening of Friday, 30th August, 2024.
“On behalf of Makerere University Council, I extend our warm congratulations to Dr. Kiyonga on this prestigious appointment and warmly welcome him to the service of Makerere University,” writes Prof. Nawangwe.
Kiyonga a former defence minister and ambassador to China now replaces Professor Ezra Suruma who retired this position in 2023.
Kiyonga’s appointment follows President Museveni’s refusal to appoint either Prof. William Bazeyo or Eng. Wana Etem who had been proposed by the Makerere University Governing Council.
Kiyonga has been a close associate of President Museveni since early 1980’s with Kiyonga becoming the only UPM Candidate to be elected to Parliament in the 1980 elections.
