KAMULI
The territorial Police of Kamuli have arrested a notorious ring leader of making and distributing counterfeit money in the region.
The suspect identified as Sowedi Egumbye was arrested in an intelligence led operation today the 26th/11/2024 at around 04:00am from Buwagi, Nawanyago Sub County in Kamuli district. The arrest follows several complaints of robberies and issuance of counterfeit notes.
ASP Michael Kasadha, the Busoga north spokesperson, confirmed the incident saying the suspect will be taken to court and answer cases of forgery and dealing in counterfeits as he is detained at Kamuli CPS.
Traders in Kamuli town report that there has been a mass circulation of counterfeit money in the denomination of 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 shillings notes. Most affected by this are mobile money shops and foods sellers in Kamuli town council. The money is circulated at night especially during power outages.
Eelier in October 2024, police in Kamuli nabbed 22 suspects, including the village chairperson of Buwasa, Buwagi in Nawanyago Sub-county. These slippery characters have been causing a ruckus in the area, scamming people, stealing, and even getting rough with a few unlucky souls.
It is alleged that Sowedi and others robbed a number of people after exchanging counterfeit dollars. They first lure the victims into believing that they have genuine dollars. They target business men and civil servants especially from Kampala and other places.
On the 19th/8/2024, the same group attacked and maliciously damaged Nawanyago police cells in an attempt to rescue a colleague who was in custody over counterfeit money distribution.
