Government has reduced driving/operation license fees for boda boda riders effective 1st August, 2024.

This was announced by the Ministry of Works and Transport in a press statement dated today, 31st July, 2024 saying the driving/operation fees for motorcycles without a sidecar, with a cubic capacity, motorcycles with a cubic capacity not exceeding 125cc and motorized tricycles and quadricycles have been reduced.

“The Ministry of Works and Transport informs the general public that driving license fees for riders/operators of vehicle category A, A1, B1 have been reduced effective 1st August 2024,” reads the statement.

The new rates are as follows; Learner driving license is now Shs40,000, whereas Driving License fees Shs100,000 for a year, Shs130,000 for 3 years and Shs250,000 for 5 years.

Renewal of the Driving License fees for 1 year is Shs70,000, 3 years is Shs100,000 and Shs200,000 for five years.

To get a Duplicate License, or extension, a boda boda rider will have to part with Shs60,000.

The statement signed by the Permanent secretary Mr. Bageya Waiswa says the new fees do not apply to other categories of vehicles.

The licences have previously been charged between Shs400,000 and 600,000, a cost that drew outrage from the boda boda industry. President Museveni eventually weighed in saying these license fees for boda bodas were exorbitant.
