The much awaited MV Bukungu Ferry that will serve Kagwara Landing Site in Serere District, Kaberamaido and Bukungu in Buyende District is now ready to start operations.

This was revealed by Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) on Wednesday, 7th August, 2024 after the ceremonial launch of M V Bukungu at Bukungu in Buyende District.

The launch followed the vessel’s successful test in what is called Floatation, an essential naval safety test in marine engineering before any vessel begins sailing operations.

“Just witnessed the ceremonial launch of M V Bukungu—Kaberamaido—Kagwara 1 into the waters of Lake Kyoga at Bukungu in Buyende District,” posted UNRA official on X Handle.

The ferry is designed to carry over 300 passengers and has capacity to load more than 20 Vehicles per trip, making it a significant addition to Uganda’s water transportation infrastructure.

“On commencement of service, the ferry will be available to all at NO cost! The Contractor is Songoro Marine Transport Limited [SMT],” says UNRA.

According to Mr Ssempebwa, UNRA’s Spokesperson, the vessel’s successful test marks a significant milestone in the history of transportation in the region.

“This vessel is expected to serve millions of passengers over the next 50 years, and we are confident that it will do so without fail,” Ssempebwa said.

The MV Bukungu-Kaberamaido-Kagwara 1 is part of efforts to improve transportation infrastructure in the region, providing a safer and more efficient means of travel for locals and tourists alike.

Its launch is eagerly anticipated, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy and communities surrounding Lake Kyoga.

“Today, our teams conducted a technical exercise to check the vessel’s ability to remain afloat and stable on the surface of water! Pleased to report that it performed exceptionally well,” UNRA Official posted on Wednesday.
