Bobi Wine termed the Kiteezi tragedy as a failure of leadership and negligence by those in power.
He accused government officials of prioritizing their own interests over the well-being of ordinary Ugandans, pointing out that despite the availability of funds, money is often misused or stolen.
“It is not that there is no money. The money is there but it is being stolen every day, and there are even more funds that are simply unused,” he said.
Parliament extravagance
Bobi Wine noted that the government’s recent decision to hold regional parliamentary sessions, costing taxpayers billions, could have been better spent on disaster response and supporting those affected by such calamities.
“Those parliamentary sessions will cost the taxpayer Shs 5 billion for each sitting. If that money was to be split amongst you here, each would get Shs. 17 billion,” he said.
The Kiteezi landfill collapse, which occurred on August 10, 2024, was triggered by heavy rains that caused a massive landslide, burying homes and causing widespread devastation. The site has been a major waste disposal area for Kampala, handling about 1,200 tonnes of waste daily. Poor waste management practices and inadequate safety measures have been cited as contributing factors to the tragedy. The government has since announced plans to decommission the landfill to prevent further disasters.
Bobi Wine vowed to take legal action against the government, emphasizing that the opposition would seek justice for the victims.
He called on those affected to join the legal case to show that the initiative is not driven by political motives but by a genuine demand for accountability and better governance.
The Opposition leader and his team donated an assortment of items including food.
