Veteran Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has suffered yet another blow after the State urged the High Court in Kampala not to grant him bail.
In an affidavit presented to the court, detective Tworekirwe Batura Wilbern argued that Dr. Besigye’s track record is tainted with repeated conflicts with the law.
The State claims that releasing him would undermine justice, citing his history of engaging in protests and defying authorities.
The prosecution insisted that Dr. Besigye is a habitual offender who, if released, would likely continue his defiant actions against the government.
This argument dimmed hopes for his supporters, who were eagerly awaiting his release.
Dr. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and long-time critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s government, has faced numerous arrests over the years, often linked to his outspoken opposition to the regime.
His legal team argued that he deserves bail, emphasizing his right to freedom and fair trial.
However, the State’s persistent stance raises concerns about political persecution and the shrinking space for opposition voices in Uganda.
The court is yet to deliver its final ruling, leaving Besigye’s fate hanging in the balance.
