When Andrew Mwenda remarked that “when Sudhir Ruparelia owned a bank, I owned it too, and when he lost the bank, I lost it as well,” many people online treated the comment like a joke. Yet the statement carried a deeper message that deserved more serious thought. What Mwenda meant was that Crane Bank represented more than just the private business of Sudhir Ruparelia. It was a Ugandan institution. It had been established by a Ugandan entrepreneur, staffed largely by Ugandans, and served citizens across the country while keeping financial activity within the national economy. When Mwenda said he also…
Kampala — A dramatic and emotionally charged case has emerged from Kampala’s rental market. A tenant claims he discovered his landlord and his wife together, and alleges the landlord has threatened to evict him if he goes public. The incident highlights the complex power-dynamics between landlords and tenants in Uganda. According to the tenant, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, he let out a house in an up-and-coming neighbourhood to a landlord he trusted. Recently, he returned unexpectedly and found the landlord in an intimate situation with his wife. The tenant says the landlord immediately recognised him,…

Toilet paper is something we use every single day without giving it much thought. It’s so common and convenient that most people assume it’s completely harmless. But what if I told you that something as ordinary as tissue paper could be silently causing harm to your health and the environment? Let’s start with the chemicals used during the production process. Many brands of toilet paper—especially the white, soft ones—go through a bleaching process to make them look clean and pure. This bleaching often involves chlorine, which can leave behind a harmful by-product called dioxin. Dioxin is linked to hormonal imbalances,…
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that targets the immune system, specifically attacking CD4 cells (T-cells), which are crucial for fighting infections. If left untreated, HIV can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), the most advanced stage of HIV infection, where the immune system becomes severely compromised. Early detection through testing is critical for effective management, enabling individuals to begin antiretroviral therapy (ART) to control the virus and maintain a healthy life. However, recognizing potential symptoms can prompt timely testing, especially since HIV symptoms can mimic those of common illnesses, particularly in the early stages. Below is an expanded…
