This tragedy is a stark reminder that we must do more to combat gender-based violence in our society, which has reared its ugly head in elite sporting circles,” Murkomen said.

He further promised that the Kenyan government would carry out a thorough investigation to hold the perpetrator accountable.

Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old marathon runner who represented Uganda at the Paris 2024 Olympics, succumbed to severe burn injuries on September 5, 2024.

The incident occurred after a violent altercation with her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, who allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire on September 1, 2024.

Cheptegei was initially hospitalized at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, but despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries, which covered more than 75% of her body.

Ugandan authorities have also expressed their grief over the loss. Uganda’s Minister of State for Education and Sports, Peter Ogwang, confirmed that the government is closely monitoring the investigation being conducted by Kenyan authorities.

He emphasized the importance of delivering justice for Cheptegei and her family, calling her death a tragic blow to Uganda’s athletics community.

Additionally, Ugandan Parliament Speaker Anita Among called for a thorough investigation, condemning the brutal act of violence. “Such barbaric acts of gender-based violence have no place in our society,” she stated, further urging that the perpetrator be brought to justice

Cheptegei, who finished 44th in the marathon event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, was a celebrated figure in Ugandan athletics, holding the women’s national marathon record.

Her passing is the latest in a disturbing series of attacks on female athletes in Kenya, following similar high-profile cases such as the murder of Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop in 2021.
