OPPO launched two flagship phones in August 2024 in Kenya. They are part of the Reno12 Series. They’re part of the company’s commitment to unlocking the future and providing customers access to trending technology like generative AI. The OPPO Reno12 and OPPO Reno12 F contain GenAI features. They’re also OPPO’s first phone series to adopt AI into their models. At the launch, OPPO PR manager, Fredrique Achieng declared that OPPO plans to accelerate the use of AI phones. OPPO’s goal is to be at the forefront of using AI in personalizing and streamlining mobile phones to improve their functionality.
The rise of GenAI phones
Most smartphones previously could allow users to perform pre-existing to create content. They only had preprogrammed instructions. GenAI phones will now use artificial intelligence which responds to user needs based on an AI model that contains diverse information that evolves rather than relying on unchanging data. According to Fast Company, a GenAI phone will have the following characteristics:
- AI tools like AI editing, AI chatbots, and AI image generation.
- GenAI apps that are part of the system software.
- The processors are designed to handle complex AI programs.
- The phone can manage AI tasks rather than sending data to AI servers for processing.
The OPPO Reno12 Series features
Design
The OPPO Reno12 and OPPO Reno12 F have a Futuristic Fluid design. They also have a new look that uses a high-strength alloy framework. This ensures the device is well-protected against falls, pressure, and water. The screen is made with gorilla glass to protect against drops. The design is bold and futuristic with space-age silver. The rear glass panel creates a 3D-like look of a rippling pond. It also comes with a matte brown finish. Both models are fingerprint-resistant. The openings like speakers, SIM card trays, and USB-C ports are reinforced to make them waterproof.
Processor and battery
The Reno12 and Reno12 F are powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7300-Energy developed exclusively by MediaTek and OPPO. The OPPO Reno12 F also has 80W SUPERVOOC flash charge technology enabling the phone to charge as fast as possible. The battery has 5000mAh and is the strongest and longest-lasting battery in the OPPO Reno series.
GenAI features
The OPPO Reno12 series contains AI Eraser 2.0 which users can remove strangers crowding photos. In addition, it can fill in backgrounds in pictures where objects are deleted. This feature enables changes a lot faster than manually using photo-editing software and is great for amateur photographers.
The Reno12 series also contains the AI Image Matting 2.0 which enables users to create cutouts that can be used as stickers. The AI studio transforms normal photos into digital avatars. The AI Studio also allows users to change their appearance completely into characters like cowboys or astronauts.
There is also the AI Recording Summary which processes voice recordings and extracts highlights onto summaries that are easy to read. This makes transcription and report-taking easier.
The GenAI tools also include AI Writer which autocompletes emails and social media posts, AI Summary for creating summaries from lengthy documents, and AI Speak which reads articles out loud. These tools are designed to make day-to-day activities easier and help users be more productive and creative.
Cameras and display
The OPPO Reno12 Series main camera has a Sony LYT-600 sensor that has full-pixel omnidirectional autofocus. It also offers more stable focusing which makes portraits crisp and clear. It also has a portrait mode that creates detail-rich bokeh pictures that look like they are captured by professional cameras. The Reno12 also has enhanced Flash Snapshot which quickly adjusts exposure to keep the lighting looking natural and the white balance well done. Human portraits also have natural skin tones. The camera can capture videos of up to 4K at a frame rate of 30fps on both the front and main camera.
The OPPO Reno12 also has the Ultra-Clear Camera System. This comes with a 50MP main camera, a 2MP macro camera for close-range photos, a 112° 8MP ultra-wide lens camera, and a 32MP selfie camera.
The OPPO Reno12 phones have a 1080p ultraHD screen that’s 6.67 inches. This guarantees a vivid display experience. The screen is also extremely sensitive, ensuring no lag when scrolling or selecting options on the display. It is a great option for users who rely on their phones for reading, gaming, and watching videos.
Connectivity
The Reno12 and Reno12 F have OPPO’s AI LinkBoost feature which has nine individual antennae to boost any signals received. The AI model enables quick network switching to ensure the phone retains connectivity no matter the environment. This feature has been tested in multiple environments to ensure effectiveness no matter where you are in the world. It ensures you remain connected even when the network is busy or weak. It also increases network recovery when the phone has to switch from WiFi to mobile data networks.
