Efforts are underway to rescue a number of people believed to be buried underneath a section of a waste mass at the Kampala Capital City Authority Landfill in Kiteezi, which collapsed on Saturday.
Several excavators are involved in the rescue efforts and some people have been retrieved from the garbage. However, others are still trapped beneath the garbage, which hit several homes, burying people and animals.
Last night’s torrential rains triggered a catastrophic collapse of the garbage dump.
State Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Lillian Aber was among the top government officials seen at the site.
KCCA in a statement said no fatalities have been recorded at this time.
“Our teams, along with other government agencies are on ground taking the necessary measures to ensure the area is secure and to prevent any further incidents,” they said.
“We are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the community. We will update you because this is a developing story,” they added.
