Tough Times For Ugandan Warlord Joseph Kony as ICC Adds New Charges Against

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has added three new charges against Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), raising the total to 39 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The updated charges follow fresh evidence, including a testimony from a victim subjected to rape, sexual slavery, and persecution.

Kony, who has evaded arrest since the ICC first issued a warrant in 2005, is now accused of orchestrating attacks on civilians in eight locations, including the abduction of over 100 girls from Lwala Girls’ Secondary School in Kalaki District in 2003.

Other targeted areas include several IDP camps in northern Uganda such as Abia, Abok, Lukodi, Pajule, and Barlonyo.

The ICC has scheduled a confirmation of charges hearing in his absence for September 9, 2025, in The Hague.

The court says all efforts to notify Kony have been made. Despite global efforts, Kony remains at large, reportedly hiding in the Central African Republic.
