Two individuals sustained serious injuries early Sunday morning when an ambulance overturned in Lopeii Village, Napak District. Among the injured is a pregnant woman who was being transported to the hospital in labor.
The ambulance, which is operated by Kotido General Hospital, was en route to St. Kizito Hospital Matany at the time of the incident. Reports suggest the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading it to roll over unexpectedly.
Eyewitnesses described the moment as terrifying.
“We saw it wobble and then suddenly it flipped,” recalled John Longoli, a resident who witnessed the crash. “We rushed over and helped pull them out.”
The injured were immediately taken to Matany Hospital for urgent medical care. Dr. Cerino Acar, the District Health Officer, confirmed the incident and stated that the medical team was working diligently to stabilize the victims. As of the latest update, the exact condition of the pregnant woman remains unclear.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary suspicions include a slippery road or excessive speed.
The crash has raised renewed concerns about the safety of patient transport in remote regions, where poor road conditions and limited infrastructure pose significant risks. Residents have urged the government to enhance road maintenance and ensure that ambulance drivers receive proper training and follow safety protocols.
“This should never happen,” said a concerned villager. “Ambulances are meant to save lives, not endanger them.”
Local officials have pledged to review the incident and take necessary steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future. In the meantime, the community continues to hope and pray for a full recovery for the injured victims.
