At least six people lost their lives and eight others were critically injured early Thursday morning when a commuter minibus, commonly referred to as a “Drone,” collided with a stationary sugarcane truck on the Jinja-Iganga Highway near Kakira.
The incident occurred around 3 a.m., when a Toyota Hiace minibus, traveling from the direction of Iganga (registration UBP 574J), crashed into the rear of a parked sugarcane truck (registration UAF 333B). The vehicle, reportedly speeding from Namisindwa District, struck the truck with such force that six passengers were killed instantly.
Kiira Region Traffic Officer, Mable Asingwire, confirmed the fatalities, adding that the injured passengers were rushed to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
This stretch of the Jinja-Iganga Highway, particularly around Kakira, has earned a reputation for frequent accidents. Local authorities are now urging drivers to exercise heightened caution in the area to help prevent further tragedies.
