Police Constable (PC) Suleiman Chemonges’s body is in his ancestral home in Kaserem, Kapchorwa District, for burial. This follows his tragic death in Ibanda District.
Chemonges, attached to Bisheshe Police Station, got killed by a mob on Sunday, April 6, 2025. This was while on duty at a funeral in Kyembogo Cell, Bisheshe Division.
The incident occurred during the burial of Lazarus Kahangire. Kahangire was a 48-year-old inmate who had died at Nyabuhikye Government Prison on remand for attempted murder charges.
Mourners accused PC Chemonges of involvement in Kahangire’s death. This after they believed he sided with certain family members in the land conflict. This resulted in his death.
Police in Ibanda District have arrested 29 people suspected of being involved in the killing of Chemonges. Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, Mr. Samson Kasasira, said investigations are ongoing. This is to find out what led to the officer’s death. He condemned the mob’s actions. He urged the public to resolve conflicts through legal means.
