Kasangati – Police in Kasangati have recovered six stolen vehicles and 16 number plates during an operation targeting a suspected car theft ring in Wampewo Village, Kasangati Town Council. The operation followed extensive intelligence gathering on Byekwaso Martin, who had been under suspicion for involvement in vehicle thefts across Kampala Metropolitan. Acting on this intelligence, police raided Martin’s car garage and recovered six vehicles, many of which had visible signs of tampering, such as broken locks and starter switches, indicating they had been stolen.
The recovered vehicles include:
- UBH 145F: A grey Toyota Wish stolen from Kirudu.
- UAV 370G: A green Toyota Noah suspected to have been stolen from Natete.
- UAL 630A: A white Toyota Mark II stolen from Old Kampala.
- UAX 793E: A grey Toyota Noah.
- A white “Kibina” Toyota without a number plate.
- A black Toyota Fielder without a number plate.
Although the prime suspect, Byekwaso Martin, was not present at the time of the raid, police arrested a mechanic, Kagenda Joshua (30), a resident of Mpelerwe, who is believed to be connected to the case.
In addition to the vehicles, police also recovered 16 number plates from the garage, further implicating the operation as a hub for stolen vehicles.
“The recovery of these vehicles and number plates is a significant step in dismantling this theft ring. We urge the public to report suspicious activity involving vehicle garages,” said a police spokesperson.
Investigations are ongoing as police intensify efforts to apprehend Martin and other accomplices involved in the operation. Vehicle owners who have recently fallen victim to theft are encouraged to visit Kasangati Police Station to identify and claim their property.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to curbing vehicle theft in the region, assuring the public of increased patrols and intelligence-led operations.
