TORORO: Chaos as LCV Councillors Restart Debate to Divide District

Chaos has erupted in the Tororo district council chambers as a proposal to discuss the controversial issue of dividing the district led to a heated exchange and repeated council adjournments.

The issue raised by Paul Eredet, a councillor representing Tororo County on Tuesday, 26th November, 2024 has re-escalated deep-seated divisions between the Japadhola and Iteso Communities in the district.

Eredet stated that the district’s big size and delayed service delivery makes the division inevitable and necessary for better governance.

Meanwhile, resistance was too quick as a group of Tororo county councillors, led by Langa Langa Peter insisted they needed more time to consult their constituents before entertaining any debate of dividing Tororo district.

On his side, Fred Emojong, district Councillor representing Kwapa Sub-county, reminded the Council of a similar motion that was passed in 2005 that approved the district’s division but was not implemented.

“In 2005, Tororo district council voted 20 to 19 in favor of dividing Tororo. Re – discussing this matter without proper authority is misleading,” Emojong said.

As the Chaos escalated, Betty Cheria, the Tororo District Speaker adjourned the sitting for 30 minutes before it resumed with postponing the discussion to the next Council meeting. The move was warmly received by Tororo county councillors.

Tororo district currently has even constituencies, 30 Sub-counties, 10 Town councils, 180 parishes, and 1,307 villages.

The issue of dividing Tororo district has been under President Museveni’s table for years, then he recently deferred it to local leaders for resolution during his Tour to Bukedi region.
