SIRONKO
The Minister in President’s office in charge of Economic Monitoring has unearthed a Shs200M Ghost Irrigation Scheme Project in Sironko district.
Beatrice Akori Akello made the discovery on Tuesday, 26th November, 2024 while on a monitoring tour of government projects in Sironko district.
Akello told Sironko district leaders that government allocated Shs200M for the construction of Wegosasa irrigation scheme located at Lubanga Cell, Mahempe Ward, Sironko Town Council in the FY 2023/2024.
She said she was surprised not to find the Irrigation Scheme on the ground yet the money was released.
Infuriated Akello has now tasked the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate the matter saying it is either the Ministry of Agriculture officials who embezzled the money or the Sironko district leadership.
Dison Balayo, the Sironko Town Council councilor to the district says he has never heard about such an irrigation scheme at Sironko Town council.
He says that Sironko Town council has only one agriculture project known as Namonywe model farming scheme used for training farmers but it’s private.
Charles Patrick Okore, the Sironko district production officer in his response to the minister said the irrigation scheme projects are implemented direct by the Ministry Agriculture and not the district.
He confirmed the existence of the ghost Scheme saying they do not have any record of Wegosasa Irrigation Scheme anywhere.
