Security guards rob Shs1.5 billion from bullion van in Kampala

Police in Kampala have launched investigations into the circumstances under which two security guards allegedly stole Shs1.5 billion from a bullion van they were escorting.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the two guards, attached to G4S, were escorting a bullion van transporting cash from Lubowa to Nakasero.

“Preliminary findings indicate that two G4S security guards, while transiting cash from Lubowa to Nakasero, allegedly conspired to rob the bullion van, registration number UAJ 199T. The vehicle was later abandoned in Nabunya, Rubaga Division, along with two rifles,” Owoyesigyire stated.

He revealed that the guards stole Shs1.06 billion in Ugandan shillings and $14,474, bringing the total to over Shs1.5 billion.

Owoyesigyire said that after receiving the report of the robbery, police investigations led to the arrest of Richard Ambrose Otim in his home district of Kwania.

“He was found in possession of Shs117 million, suspected to be part of the stolen money. Investigations are ongoing, and more details will be shared as soon as they are available,” Owoyesigyire said.
