Teen Girl Set on Fire by Aunt in Shocking Shs400,000 Dispute

Kyondo Village, Kapeeka Sub-county, Nakaseke District – A 16-year-old girl, Bridget Akello, is battling for her life at Kiruddu Hospital after sustaining severe burns in a house fire allegedly set by her aunt, Celina Nalukwago. The incident, which has shocked the local community, occurred in Kyondo Village and is believed to stem from a combination of domestic tensions, financial disputes, and possible gender-based violence.

Nalukwago, now in police custody, has been charged with attempted murder. The circumstances surrounding the attack reveal a complex web of family conflict and economic strain.

Conflicting Accounts of the Motive

Initial police reports indicate that the attack was triggered by a dispute over missing money amounting to Shs400,000. However, community members have offered differing explanations for the aunt’s alleged actions.

Some residents claim that Nalukwago was driven by jealousy, suspecting her husband of favoring Akello. Others suggest that financial pressures played a role, as Nalukwago, who typically provided food for the household, returned home to find that her husband had given Akello money to purchase necessities.

Mr. Moses Ssenfuma, the Kapeeka Sub-county chairperson, revealed that Akello’s mother is currently working in Saudi Arabia and had entrusted her daughter to Nalukwago’s care. This arrangement, he noted, may have contributed to underlying tensions within the household.

A Horrific Attack

According to Ms. Safina Nantege, a neighbor, Nalukwago allegedly purchased paraffin, doused Akello’s dress with it, and locked her in a room before setting it on fire.

“The young girl pleaded for mercy, but Nalukwago refused to open the door. It was the neighbors who rushed to break it open and save her,” Nantege recounted.

Reports further indicate that Nalukwago initially resisted efforts to seek medical help for Akello, accusing the girl of theft. It was only after police intervened—saving Nalukwago from a potential lynch mob—that Akello was rushed to the hospital for urgent treatment.

Calls for Justice and Child Protection

Authorities are urging a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure justice for Akello. Child welfare advocates have also called on the government to strengthen measures aimed at protecting vulnerable children, particularly those left in the care of guardians who may not prioritize their well-being.

This tragic case highlights the urgent need for community awareness and intervention to address domestic violence and safeguard children in similar situations.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds
