Police in Mpigi District have detained Jajja Ivan Muwanga, a well-known traditional healer from Kamengo, over allegations that he kidnapped children and may have been involved in the disappearance of at least twelve minors. His arrest followed a reported abduction attempt involving a young girl, Proscovia Nassazi.
According to authorities, Nassazi escaped after Muwanga allegedly tried to seize her. She immediately alerted her family, who quickly informed police. Officers moved in to arrest Muwanga, bringing an end to what investigators believe may be a long-running pattern of suspicious activity.
After taking him into custody, police searched several of his shrines. Detectives say they recovered materials and items that could connect him to previously reported cases of missing children. Investigators are now examining evidence and statements that suggest more than a dozen children may have fallen victim to his alleged practices.
The news has left residents stunned. Community members described Muwanga as someone who regularly held social gatherings at his shrines, often inviting neighbours to attend. Many now fear those events may have been used to disguise illegal activities and gain the trust of families in the area.
Police say the investigation is still ongoing and more information will be released as detectives continue to interview witnesses and review evidence.
