Shock and grief engulfed the community of Katende Triangle in Bugembe, Jinja City, after a man allegedly set his room on fire, killing his wife and nine-month-old daughter before taking his own life.
Police identified the man as 25-year-old Edirisa Isabirye, a boda boda rider, who reportedly placed a burning charcoal stove under the bed in an attempt to harm his family.
The fire quickly spread, engulfing the room and killing his wife, 17-year-old Mirabu Kakazi, and their daughter, Mirabu Munana.
Authorities say the incident occurred around 2:30am on Tuesday. After the fire, Isabirye reportedly used a bedsheet to hang himself.Kiira Region Police spokesperson SP James Mubi said preliminary investigations suggest the couple had a troubled relationship marked by frequent conflicts and domestic violence.
“Reports indicate that their relationship was strained, with continuous arguments and emotional distress,” Mubi said.
He urged couples to prioritise mutual respect, trust, and open communication, warning that toxic relationships can escalate into tragic situations.
“People should recognise early warning signs in marriages and relationships to make informed decisions. If you are in a life-threatening situation, know when to leave or seek professional help,” he said.
The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their respective families for burial. Kakazi will be laid to rest in Namagera Town Council, Jinja District, while Isabirye and his daughter will be buried in Bukoma Sub-county, Luuka District.
Authorities have called on community leaders, religious organisations, and families to support individuals facing domestic challenges and promote peaceful conflict resolution strategies.
The tragedy highlights the urgent need for mental health awareness, relationship counseling, and timely interventions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
