Police in Kakumiro are looking into a robbery where a businessman was badly hurt and his wife was later taken into custody. The attack happened on Monday night in Rusolera village, Kijangi Sub-county. Jackson Tumwebazi, 45, was walking home with his wife, Ruth Ainembabazi, after closing their shop. On the way, three men with guns came out of the bushes and stopped them.
The men asked for a bag they thought had money. Tumwebazi refused to give it to them, and one of the attackers shot him in the leg. The group then ran off with the bag, firing more bullets into the air to scare people.
Neighbours heard the gunfire and rushed over. They later called the police. Tumwebazi was taken for treatment. He told police he thinks the robbers had been following him and knew his movements.
Police spokesperson Julius Hakiza said Ainembabazi was arrested to help with the investigation. He said officers are also looking into whether someone close to the family was involved in the plan.
At the scene, police found two empty bullet shells which they will use as evidence. Hakiza said the case is being handled as aggravated robbery, and the search for the attackers is still ongoing.
