Seven people lost their lives in a deadly road accident on Monday morning at Kabale Swamp in Katikara Sub County, Kakumiro District. The incident took place on the Kakumiro-Hoima road and involved a collision between a Toyota Wish, registered as UBF 887M, and a Toyota Hiace Drone Taxi, registered as UBL 456M.
The driver of the Toyota Wish, Roger, a resident of Kihuuna in Kakindo Sub County, died instantly at the scene. Several other injured individuals were taken to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where some later passed away due to their injuries.
An eyewitness, Kyakutegekeire, explained that Roger was driving toward Hoima City when he tried to pass another vehicle. This resulted in a head-on collision with the Toyota Drone Taxi, which was heading toward Mubende and driven by Silaj Kugumisiriza Kahwa. The eyewitness attributed the crash to excessive speed and careless overtaking.
Sunday William, the Katikara Sub County district councilor, voiced his concern about the growing number of accidents on the Kakumiro-Hoima highway. He pointed out that just the previous evening, a Fuso truck had struck a motorcycle, claiming two lives. He identified speeding and reckless driving as the primary reasons for these devastating incidents and called on road users to be more cautious and prioritize safety to avoid further tragedies.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the accident and said that investigations are underway to determine the precise number of deaths. He promised to update the media once the death toll is finalized.
As fatal accidents continue to rise in the area, officials are pressing drivers to refrain from dangerous overtaking, reduce their speed, and adhere closely to traffic regulations.
