Shock and grief gripped residents on Tuesday after a boda boda rider collapsed and died suddenly in what authorities suspect to be complications linked to excessive alcohol consumption.
Eyewitnesses say the rider, whose identity has not yet been released, was going about his daily routine when he suddenly fell and failed to regain consciousness. Locals rushed to his aid, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Community members revealed that the deceased was known to struggle with heavy drinking, a habit that had raised concerns among family and friends in recent months.
Police confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway to establish the exact cause of death. “Preliminary information points to alcoholism, but a postmortem will provide more clarity,” a source within the police noted.
Health experts have consistently warned about the dangers of excessive alcohol use in Uganda, linking it to chronic illnesses, organ failure, and sudden deaths. According to health statistics, Uganda ranks among the countries with the highest alcohol consumption rates in Africa.
The rider’s body was later taken to hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination, as family members and fellow riders mourned the untimely loss.
