25 Year Old Man Arrested for Exhuming Grandma’s Remains, Setting Home fire

Mbale Police have arrested a 25-year-old man, Fred Mabonga, also known as Kumbuku, for allegedly setting fire to two houses, cutting down crops belonging to his parents, and exhuming his grandmother’s remains.

The incident occurred on saturday night, 1st march, 2025 in Namawanga village, Bushikori parish, Bungokho Sub County, Mbale district.

According to Joseph Wanyama, the LCI defense Secretary of Namawanga village, Mabonga’s actions were influenced by drug use, as there were no reported misunderstandings between him and his community or parents.

The damaged properties include two houses, one belonging to himself and the other to his father Christopher Sawa as well as crops like bananas and coffee. The exhumed grave belonged to Mabonga’s grandmother, Edisa Khainza, who was buried in May last year.

Naoume Nakawala, the Mbale District Deputy Resident District Commissioner, reported that during Mabonga’s arrest he was found with drugs like marijuana and opium, which likely contributed to his actions.

Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, stating that Mabonga is currently being detained at Bungokho police post.
