Tragedy struck in Jinja City on Friday when a local plumber lost his life after being electrocuted while attempting to fix an electrical fault.
The deceased, whose identity had not yet been disclosed by press time, was reportedly called to a client’s residence in Walukuba-Masese division to attend to a plumbing issue. However, eyewitnesses say he also attempted to handle an electrical problem in the house, an area outside his expertise.
According to residents, while trying to adjust exposed wires near the bathroom, the plumber came into direct contact with a live electric cable. He was instantly electrocuted and pronounced dead on the spot.
Authorities, led by officers from Jinja Central Police Station, quickly responded to the scene. Police confirmed the incident and warned members of the public against attempting to handle electrical problems without professional electricians.
“The deceased was a plumber, not an electrician. Unfortunately, his attempt to fix the electrical wiring cost him his life,” a police source said.
The body was later taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem as investigations continue.
Local leaders and residents expressed shock at the incident, urging people to seek qualified professionals for specialized work. “This is a sad reminder that every profession has its limits. It is always better to call the right person for the job,” one resident said.
The tragic death has left the community in mourning and highlighted the dangers of tampering with electricity without proper training.
