Police in Kibaale, western Uganda, have arrested a man on suspicion of murdering his wife during a dispute over a Shs 100,000 loan.

The suspect, Andrew Ndyayambegye, a resident of Kanoga-Kitooma village in Matale sub-county, is accused of attacking his wife, 47-year-old Beatrace Kaitesi, after she allegedly took a loan from a local village savings group in his name without his consent.

According to police, Ndyayambegye allegedly struck Kaitesi repeatedly on the head and face with a hand hoe, causing severe injuries. Kaitesi was initially taken to a nearby clinic but was later referred to Mubende hospital for more advanced medical care.

She, however, died en route to the hospital. Following the attack, Ndyayambegye reportedly fled the scene. Mathias Sunday, the local council chairperson, said residents immediately organized a manhunt and managed to find the suspect hiding in a nearby bush on Monday.

He was then handed over to the police. Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and said Ndyayambegye is currently being held at Kibaale central police station on murder charges. Hakiza added that the suspect will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
