Three people lost their lives in a tragic road accident that occurred early Sunday morning along the Kazo–Rushere Road near Kazo Community Hospital.
The fatal crash involved a motorcycle, registration number UFY 060Q, which was carrying three individuals, and a double-cabin pickup, registration UBJ 801W. All three occupants of the motorcycle died on the spot due to the impact of the head-on collision.
According to the Kazo District Police, the deceased have been identified as Niclas Tusingwire, 18, the rider; Jova Akampurira, 26; both residents of Kaikoti, Kikatsi Sub-county in Kiruhura District; and Macklean Gumoshabe, 32, from Ruhama in Ntungamo District.
The driver of the pickup, Steven Noowe Kirimani, 54, a resident of Karisizo in Kazo Town Council, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Ruhoko Hospital in Ibanda District for medical attention.
Authorities say preliminary investigations point to reckless overtaking as a likely cause of the crash, although full inquiries are still underway.
Police at Kazo Central Station have cautioned all road users to exercise extra vigilance, particularly along rural highways where speeding and improper overtaking are common.
“This is a tragic reminder of the need for strict adherence to road safety regulations. We extend our condolences to the families of the deceased,” said a police spokesperson at the scene.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kazo Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem.
The incident adds to the growing number of road fatalities in the country, with traffic authorities urging motorists and cyclists to prioritize safety.
