The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has early this week closed a Zero Grazing Cattle Project in plush Kampala suburb of Kololo.

The Project was located on Plot 9, Elgon Terrace, Upper Kololo, Kampala Capital City.

According to a statement issued by NEMA today, 7th November, 2024, the small scale Project involving 10 Friesian cows was started in 2019 by a one Musoga originating from Iganga.

It says, the project attracted complaints from neighbours who reported the issue to NEMA citing pollution of their environment by the cows’ dung, noise pollution by the cows’ mows that averaged 85Db way above the authorized 55Db recommended for a mixed residential area.

“The farmer was guided by the Authority and in February, 2024 transferred 6 Cows to a farm in Iganga district,” reads the NEMA statement in part.

However, the farmer left behind 4 cows which kept the complaints reaching NEMA.

“However, the complaints did not cease which led to an inspection of the Project Site involving the Environment Protection Force personnel,” NEMA adds.

During the inspection, NEMA discovered that farmer had no valid license, was emitting both air and sound pollution and was practicing poor waste (dung) management.

Consequently, the project was closed and the farmer urged to take the remaining four cows to his Iganga farm.

Section 4 and 5 of the Local Government’s Ordinance, 2006 (KCCA), prohibits animal keeping in the City and requires a developer who intends to practice Livestock Farming in the City to obtain a relevant permit to do so.
