Three Eastern Uganda Region Districts have been earmarked to benefit from 76,950 million US Dollars irrigation project using a loan from the African Development Bank under the Ministry of Agriculture Fishing and Animal Husbandry
The districts are Sironko, Bukedea and Bulambuli.
This was revealed by Nelson Kirenda, the Sironko District Chief Administrative Officer on Monday 4th November, 2024 at his office in Sironko while launching the project.
Kirenda says the construction of a water dam is commencing in December, 2024 expected to be completed in the next five years. The project will then be officially launched after the completion of the Dam with farmers from sub counties neighboring River Sironko in the three respective districts using the project to irrigate their crops.
He says construction works of the project are soon going to kick off at Bukedea district along River Sironko on the boundary of Sironko and Bulambuli district.
Kiranda urged locals from the three districts to embrace the project saying this is going to avoid flooding, improve on production of food, all year crop growing since water for irrigation will be available.
Simon Wasukila and Jeremiah Masa, all beneficiaries from Sironko expressed their happiness and embraced the project.
They urged the government to pay compensation for their lands before establishing the project such that they can leave the place and buy land somewhere to pave the way for construction.
