Kampala, Uganda — Shock and grief engulfed the Ultimate Security Company offices in Mbuya on Wednesday morning, after a deadly shooting incident claimed three lives, including that of the gunman.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, the attack occurred around 9:00 a.m. when Richard Mwaawa, a private security guard employed by the firm, opened fire on his colleagues without warning. The victims were identified as Noella Zella, the assistant human resource officer, and Salez Bwampata, the company’s armoury officer. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Responding swiftly to an emergency call, officers from Jinja Road Police Station arrived to find Mwaawa still armed and posing an active threat. He was shot and killed during the standoff.

“Our officers acted promptly to neutralize the situation and prevent further loss of life,” said Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police.

Police have launched a full-scale investigation to establish what may have triggered the fatal incident. The firearm used in the shooting has been recovered and submitted for ballistic and forensic analysis, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Sources within the company say Mwaawa had not shown any prior signs of distress or conflict, raising questions about whether the act was premeditated, or linked to mental health or workplace grievances.

The tragic event has sparked concerns over internal security protocols and mental health screening within private security firms across the country. Authorities are also urging companies to strengthen their systems for monitoring the psychological well-being of armed personnel.

This is a developing story. More updates will follow as investigations progress.
