Popular comedian Kapere Lufotose has officially joined the political arena after picking nomination forms to contest for the position of Lord Councillor representing Makindye in the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).Kapere, known for his humor and bold commentary on social issues, made the announcement at the Electoral Commission offices in Makindye amidst cheers from supporters and fellow entertainers.

Dressed in his signature flamboyant style, the comedian said his decision to join politics stems from a deep desire to serve his community beyond the stage.

“I have made people laugh for years, but now it’s time to help them live better,” Kapere told journalists.

“Makindye has many challenges—from poor roads to youth unemployment. I believe someone who understands the people can be a strong voice for them.”

His move has sparked mixed reactions online and across political circles, with some praising his courage to transition from comedy to leadership, while others question his readiness for public office.

However, Kapere remains undeterred, urging the public not to dismiss entertainers as unserious candidates.

“I know what it means to grow up in Makindye, to hustle, and to be overlooked. I want to bring that lived experience into council decisions,” he added.

Several entertainers including singer Bobi Wine and actor Kato Lubwama have previously made successful transitions into politics, and Kapere’s entry appears to follow a growing trend of celebrities turning to political leadership.

The 2026 general elections are expected to attract a wide field of candidates across Kampala, and Kapere’s entry adds a new dynamic to the race in Makindye.More details are expected as the campaign season unfolds.
