Police in Buhweju district have launched investigations into a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of eight market vendors and left seven others injured along the Nsiika–Bukiro road on saturday night.
According to the greater Bushenyi regional police spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, the accident involved a Fuso lorry registration number UBA 649Z, which was heading to Rubindi.
Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle lost control while descending a slope after its brakes failed.
SP Tayebwa identified some of the deceased as Musinguzi Justus and Turyagyenda Jackson, both male residents of Rubindi in mbarara district; Kekimuli and Kemigisha, female residents of the same area; and four other male victims whose identities had not yet been established by press time.
The injured survivors were named as Babanza Joab (45), Turyasingura Valentino (26), Akampurira Amon (31), Kyarikunda Jovanis (49), Kayongo Yasin (24), Katushabe Joan (42), along with three males and one female who were yet to be identified.
Police said they responded promptly to the scene, rescued the injured victims, and rushed them to Nsiika health centre IV for medical attention.
The bodies of the deceased were also conveyed to the same facility’s mortuary for postmortem examinations to establish the exact cause of death, in line with legal requirements.
SP Tayebwa added that efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the driver of the lorry as investigations continue.
