Loss! Cattle Truck Flips, Kills 40 Cows On Spot

Several cows are dead after a cattle truck flipped over Monday night in Texas, west of Dallas.

It happened just after 9:30 p.m. on the I-30 bridge at Baird Farm Road in Arlington, stopping traffic in both directions. There were no impacts to traffic on I-30 Tuesday morning.

According to Arlington police, the truck driver had just taken the Baird Farm Road exit off westbound I-30. As he came to the intersection of the frontage road, he misjudged how much space there was to make a turn, causing the truck to overturn. Police said the driver of the truck was not injured.

Arlington police said there were about 80 head of cattle on the trailer and an estimated 40 to 45 animals were killed. One cow escaped and was struck and killed by another vehicle.

It is unknown how many cows were on the truck and how many died. CBS News Texas crews at the scene said there was a forklift carrying dead cattle off the roadway and live cattle were being transported on other trucks.

At around 5:10 a.m. Tuesday, the truck was uprighted and no longer on its side. As of 9 a.m., the scene was fully cleared.

CBS News Texas is working to learn more information, including checking with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality about the impacts of the crash.

Arlington police, fire and the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office Animal Response Unit responded to the accident.
