17-year-old mother commits suicide over rice dispute with husband
Tragedy struck the Labi community in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State when a 17-year-old mother, identified as Deola, reportedly took her life following a domestic disagreement with her husband, Seyi, over two cups of rice.Deola, who left behind a one-year-and-five-month-old child, allegedly consumed insecticide after the dispute. She was buried on Tuesday, leaving family and community members in shock.
According to sources, the misunderstanding began when Deola’s husband advised her to measure just two cups of rice for the day’s meal, as the food was meant only for her and their child. The suggestion reportedly upset her, leading her husband to leave the house to avoid further conflict.
“When she was trying to prepare food in the morning, the husband only advised her to measure just two cups because the food was meant for her and the kid, meaning that he (husband) would not eat out of it, but she got angry,” a family source revealed.
After preparing the food and taking her child to school, Deola allegedly consumed the insecticide without anyone noticing.
Another family member recounted how Deola’s condition rapidly deteriorated.
“She suddenly became weak and started vomiting. After we discovered that, we called her husband, who had already left home, to come back.
“We quickly rushed her to a nearby hospital before she was transferred to another hospital at Orogun in Akinyele Local Government. She eventually gave up the ghost, and we buried her yesterday (Tuesday),” the source said.
As of the time of reporting, efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, for comments were unsuccessful.
